PROFESSIONAL COACHING

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Therapy focuses on mental health conditions and resolving issues from childhood or the past. It requires a licensed therapist with specific training.

Life coaching focuses on goal setting, personal growth, and making positive changes by looking at obstacles that disrupt well-being. Coaches do not have to be certified. I trained at the Carolyn Freyer-Jones Coaching Success School.

What is lovingkindness coaching?

Lovingkindness is a Buddhist concept that I’ve adapted to my coaching style. Lovingkindness practices cultivate a sense of warmth, compassion, and genuine care toward oneself and others. To put this concept into action in a personal way, we first explore mindfulness practices that assist in changing harmful self-talk. I help you turn down the volume of the inner critic. We explore self-care, the power of routines, and how to develop daily positive habits. Lovingkindness is about tapping into the universal basic human desire to feel peace and equanimity and then using that desire to move into action.

What happens in a coaching session with Janet?

I always offer a grounding meditation to start. Most clients choose to begin the session this way. I also offer individualized blessings at the end.

In the early sessions, I lead an assessment process examining every area of a client’s life. We examine what is working well and what the client wants to shift or change externally and internally. Then, we prioritize the work. Sometimes, we pick a concrete goal (e.g., a new job, more robust physical health, or a better relationship with a partner, parent, or child). The goal informs the internal shifts that need to happen. Sessions occur over the phone and sometimes face-to-face (intensives are always in person). There is always laughter. I believe when something feels critical, we don't have to be overly serious. The world can be a funny place.

I customize packages for each client as each person has unique needs. Clients typically work with me for six months to a year.

“Collaborating with Janet as a coach far exceeded my expectations. I accomplished more than I hoped for through coaching and felt completely supported all the way. Janet's generous listening and thoughtful offerings were instrumental in assisting in achieving my goals. Janet's guided meditations utilized her intuition to help me connect with my own inner knowing. The year I invested with Janet enabled me to be the me I yearned to become: confident in myself, loving and kind in my relationships, and welcoming of my creativity. I felt nurtured and nourished by Janet's affirmations and able to grow and evolve through her gentle suggestions and compassionate coaching.” – Angela Kuest, senior project manager in the oil and gas industry
